Jellyfish

Artist Statement

"Synthetic Swarm" confronts and challenges our perceptions of beauty and environmental degradation. A swarm of jellyfish entirely composed of discarded plastic materials serves as a powerful metaphor for the widespread crisis of plastic pollution in our oceans. Jellyfish are often considered indicators of ecological change, thriving in disrupted environments where other species decline. Similarly, the prevalence of plastic waste serves as a stark indicator of human impact on the planet. We aim to capture the tension between beauty and destruction. The installation combines the concepts of beauty and environmental concern, encouraging viewers to explore the complex relationship between shape, material, and meaning.

At the heart of "Synthetic Swarm" lies the paradox of aesthetic appeal and environmental urgency. Each jellyfish reflects the beauty and resilience of these creatures, while simultaneously the destructive permanence of plastic waste. The installation hangs from above, with jellyfish arranged as if dancing gracefully, resembling their underwater movements and creating a dreamlike mood that contrasts with the sad truth of their plastic composition. By repurposing plastic waste into elements of aesthetic value, "Synthetic Swarm" challenges the viewer to reconsider the role and impact of synthetic materials in our natural world, acting as both a visual and conceptual prompt for discussions on sustainability and consumerism. We seek to ignite a sense of responsibility and inspire change, leveraging art’s power to influence perception and provoke thought.
